Healthy Eating: Its all Good
Today I picked up a new cookbook by Gwyneth Paltrow, the much-anticipated It’s All Good. With the tagline “delicious, easy recipes that will make you look good and feel great,” I knew that this one would be right up my alley.
When I started WMS, I made a promise to myself and to all women who read this blog. I figured that if I could feel comfortable in the kitchen, cooking for my husband and family, then anyone could get comfortable managing their finances!
I am a healthy eater by nature while my husband is a traditional British cook. Our taste buds and appetites can sometimes differ like chalk and cheese - he doesn’t like salad, greens or fish, while I count these as my favorite meals! Needless to say, it can be a challenge trying to find a happy medium that satisfies us both.
But tonight I finally made a breakthrough. Exhausted at the end of a super busy day, I flipped open my new cookbook and landed on a quick, easy recipe. In no time, I had whipped together a delicious, healthy meal. In Gwyneth’s words, it was all good!
The meal combined a selection of my favorite ingredients – quinoa, tofu, tomato, spinach and carrots, with a side salad of spinach, snap peas and red capsicum.
Gwyneth once told me (okay, not personally – she may have blogged about it) that her dad adds maple syrup to his salad dressing for a bit of sweetness.
And so taking her advice, I whisked together my usual blend of olive oil, seeded mustard and lemon before adding a dash of maple syrup a’la Gwyneth. And boy did it make a difference! The verdict according to my husband, who famously dislikes greens, was that it was absolutely beautiful! Now if you knew my husband, this comment would probably have you falling off your seat. Everybody knows that he and salads just don’t mix! Who knew that all it would take to convert him would be a simple splash of sweet maple syrup?
He is so keen to try his next green salad that he is eagerly awaiting tomorrow night’s meal. Today’s culinary adventure (and my husband’s surprise enthusiasm) really got me thinking about the similarity between cooking and finances.
Just like the hesitation to try new flavors and recipes in the kitchen, many of us are unsure about our financial options, would rather stick to what we know, or simply avoid talking about money altogether.
If you’ve been avoiding working out your financial plan or dealing with your debts – give it a go, it may taste sweater than you first thought!
I hope you enjoyed today’s post!
